From Grand Rapids, Michigan—to Everywhere Else 

What a hometown is to a military family.

Ask me where I’m from, and I’ll say: “I’m originally from Michigan, but I live in Italy now and am moving to Canada next.” In a column on American hometowns, that answer hardly sounds American. But that’s the reality of American military spouses the world over. We define “hometown” in a myriad of ways.
