The announcement of Chris Appleton as the latest Strictly Come Dancing contestant has sparked a divided response on social media, with some viewers branding the BBC "desperate" in their casting choices.
Several fans expressed confusion over the selection, with one posting "How many times have the British public said, 'who?'" whilst another simply stated they had "never heard of him."
The news was shared across Strictly's official social media platforms on Friday, with the show set to return to BBC One and iPlayer in September.
Mr Appleton has established himself as one of the most sought-after hairstylists in the entertainment industry, with a client roster featuring some of Hollywood's biggest names.
One critic questioned the show's direction entirely, writing: "That's a weird signing. I don't know who Strictly are appealing to this year with the lineup they've announced so far."
Someone else added: "Never heard of him," while another wrote: "Getting desperate now."
One mores simply posted a GIF reading: "Are you taking the p***?"
However, supporters rushed to defend the choice, with one fan noting: "He's definitely a niche choice but the people who know KNOW!
"He's beyond successful and does hair for nearly almost every celeb in Hollywood."
Appleton becomes the fourth celebrity confirmed for the 2026 series, following earlier announcements of EastEnders actress Lacey Turner, Love Island winner Dani Dyer, and Australian singer Delta Goodrem.
The BBC has opted to reveal its lineup considerably earlier than in previous years, when contestant names were typically disclosed from August onwards.
This series marks a significant change for the long-running programme, which will air without former hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman for the first time.
Taking over presenting duties is a new trio comprising ex-professional dancer Johannes Radebe, comedian Josh Widdecombe, and Emma Willis.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
The Leicester-born stylist has worked extensively with Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Sofía Vergara, Ariana Grande, and Katy Perry throughout his career.
His creative work has graced the pages of numerous prestigious publications, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, and Grazia.
Vogue UK has previously recognised him as a "Hair Star" for his distinctive creative vision and meticulous approach to styling.
Beyond his salon work, Appleton recently achieved literary success with his debut memoir Your Roots Don't Define You, which reached the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Mr Appleton expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, describing it as a homecoming to the UK.
"I'm thrilled to be joining Strictly Come Dancing and coming home to the UK for this incredible experience," he said.
"I've always believed that the best things happen when you take a chance and try something new."
The stylist acknowledged the challenge ahead, drawing a distinction between his professional expertise and the unfamiliar territory of competitive dancing.
"I may know my way around a salon floor, but the dance floor is a whole different story – and I can't wait to get started," Mr Appleton added.
Further contestant announcements are expected throughout the summer as the BBC builds towards the new series launch in autumn.
