A message on the hugely popular Welsh power ballad diva's website read: "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for."

Ms Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, near Neath, first found success with Lost in France in 1977 before her distinctive husky vocals propelled It's a Heartache into the top five on both UK and US charts.

Her defining moment came in 1983 when Total Eclipse of the Heart, written by Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman, reached number one in Britain and America.

The dramatic ballad, originally conceived for a vampire musical under the title Vampires in Love, earned her a Grammy nomination.

"I never get tired of singing it," she recently told BBC News. "I love it because everyone can't wait to sing it."

This year, the track surpassed one billion Spotify streams, 43 years after its release.

Ms Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, performing Believe in Me and finishing in 19th position with 23 points.

A decade later, she received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for her services to music, an accolade she treasured above all others.

Speaking at the ceremony, she said: "I never ever thought I would have something like this, my mother and father would be so proud.

"To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career."

The singer earned three Grammy nominations throughout her career, including recognition for her album Faster Than the Speed of Night.

Ms Tyler's health had been deteriorating since April when she began experiencing severe abdominal pain.

She was rushed to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she had maintained a residence since 1988, and underwent emergency surgery after her appendix ruptured.

Complications followed the procedure, including a serious infection that led doctors to place her in an induced coma on May 6.

When medical staff attempted to revive her, she suffered cardiac arrest and required resuscitation.

On June 15, her team announced she had regained consciousness but remained critically ill in intensive care, with recovery expected to be a lengthy process.

Mr Tyler is survived by her husband Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973.
