The American performer died following complications from a severe illness

Daveigh Chase, the former child actress who terrified audiences as the ghostly Samara Morgan in the 2002 horror film The Ring and provided the voice for the beloved title character in Disney's Lilo & Stitch, has died at the age of 35.

The American performer passed away on Tuesday following complications from a severe illness, according to reports that emerged earlier today.

Her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, confirmed the news of her death to media outlets.

Ms Chase had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Los Angeles, where she had been admitted earlier this month.

The actress gained widespread recognition as a young performer in the early 2000s through her memorable roles in both live-action and animated productions.

According to Mr Hernandez, Ms Chase's death resulted from septic complications caused by meningitis combined with a blood infection, which ultimately led to her body shutting down.

The 35-year-old had initially been taken to a Los Angeles medical facility earlier in June after suffering from malnutrition.

Her condition subsequently deteriorated when she developed the serious infections that would prove fatal.

Mr Hernandez revealed to TMZ that the combination of meningitis and the blood infection triggered the septic issues that claimed her life.

Prior to her death, Mr Hernandez had established a crowdfunding page seeking support for the couple during her final days.

In an emotional message on the GoFundMe page, he wrote: "Recently, everything changed.

"Daveigh was diagnosed with meningitis and several serious blood infections. Her condition has become critical, and the doctors have told me she may not have much time left."

Mr Hernandez expressed his desire to fulfil Ms Chase's simple wishes during her remaining time.

"All she ever wanted was a place where we could live together, feel safe, and be happy," he continued.

"Now, more than ever, I want to give her that sense of home and peace in her final days."

The heartfelt appeal revealed the gravity of her condition before she succumbed to the illness.

Ms Chase first captured the public's attention through her voice work as the spirited Hawaiian girl Lilo in Disney's 2002 animated feature, a role that showcased her talents as a young performer.

That same year, she delivered a chilling performance as the vengeful spirit Samara Morgan in Gore Verbinski's horror remake The Ring, cementing her status as one of Hollywood's most recognisable child stars of the era.

Her portrayal of the long-haired ghost emerging from a television screen became one of the most iconic images in modern horror cinema.

However, Ms Chase's career trajectory shifted significantly in the years that followed her early success.

According to reports, she effectively withdrew from the entertainment industry in 2016 after experiencing a series of personal and legal difficulties.
