Naturally occurring melatonin found in organic ingredients could significantly enhance one's nightly rest

And although they can't combat the root cause of insomnia, natural sleep aids like magnesium supplements and tart cherry juice have shown promise in helping people get the shut-eye they need.

Registered dietitian Carla Hernandez says scientific research provides reasonable grounds for optimism.

She told GB News: "Moderate evidence suggests that consuming tart cherry juice before bed can improve sleep, thanks to its natural melatonin content - the hormone that supports restful sleep."

The tart cherry, which is one of the very few natural sources of metabolism, has been touted for promoting both better sleep and blood pressure.

Taken as a beverage, the cherries may offer a similar effect to melatonin supplements, because they have a similar molecular profile.

"Moderate evidence suggests consuming [the] juice before bed can improve sleep," Hernandez shared, who notes that it enhances both the quality of sleep and its overall duration.

"I recommend drinking tart cherry juice daily, about an hour before bed, as consistency is key," the dietitian advised.

She recommends consumers opt for varieties that are not made from concentrate and contain no added sugar.

And for those who are unable to source the beverage, Ms Hernandez advises alternative teas as a means for promoting better sleep.

The advantage of consuming beverages over solid foods, she explains, lies in the minimal digestive effort required before bedtime.

"I'm a big fan of teas for promoting better sleep," she said. "Unlike food, your body doesn't have to work hard to digest it before bed.

"Teas with chamomile, valerian root, passionflower, or lavender are excellent choices to encourage relaxation and support restful sleep."
