Barclays has said not as many people are using branches these days, leading to the closures

Barclays has announced a further 18 bank branch closures, just weeks after it was confirmed 16 other branches will shut.

It's another blow for people who prefer in-person banking, leaving some facing travelling miles to their local branch.

Barclays said they are now seeing "many" customers choosing to bank via their app, online banking service or by telephone.

In its latest round of closures, it was confirmed the bank will shut three branches in Wales, two sites in Scotland, and 13 locations in England.

Banks and building societies have closed 5,791 branches since January 2015, according to Which?.

Barclays has reduced its network the most, closing 1,130 sites during this time, the consumer champion said.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

"Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 300 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our banking pods.

"We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”
