Roughly six million households across Britain now qualify for the annual discount

Millions of energy customers across Britain are set to benefit from a total of £750 in discounts on their bills over the coming five winters.

The Warm Home Discount Scheme has been confirmed for extension through to winter 2030/31, with qualifying households receiving £150 off their electricity costs each year.

Customers of major suppliers such as British Gas, Octopus Energy, EDF, and E.ON Next stand to gain from the continued support, provided they remain eligible throughout the five-year period.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero confirmed the extension at the end of July, covering England, Wales, and Scotland.

Rather than being paid as a lump sum, the annual £150 reduction is applied directly to electricity bills by energy suppliers.

Households that consistently meet the qualifying conditions each year will accumulate £750 in savings by the final winter of the scheme in 2030/31.

Currently, 24 energy suppliers are participating in the programme, ensuring broad coverage for eligible customers nationwide.

The scheme for winter 2026/27 is due to reopen in October, with the £150 discount applied directly by suppliers to qualifying customers' bills.

The full roster of 24 participating providers spans a wide range of the market: 100Green, Boost, British Gas, E, Ecotricity, EDF, EnergyCoop, E.ON Next, Fuse Energy, Good Energy, Home Energy, London Power, Octopus Energy, Outfox Energy, OVO, Sainsbury's Energy, ScottishPower, So Energy, Square 1 Energy, TruEnergy, Tulo Energy, Utilita, and Utility Warehouse.

To qualify in England and Wales, the billpayer must be in receipt of Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, or Universal Credit.

Crucially, they need to be named on their electricity bill by August 23, 2026 for the discount to be applied automatically.

Scottish households face slightly different criteria. The rebate is granted automatically where the customer or their partner receives Pension Credit, claims additional Universal Credit owing to a disability or health condition, or receives certain disability or pensioner premiums alongside income-related ESA or a Support for Mortgage Interest loan.

The DESNZ said: "Every household where the billpayer is on means-tested benefits is in line for the rebate, following the expansion of the scheme last year."

Last winter's broadening of eligibility brought close to a million additional families with children into the programme, significantly widening its reach.

Roughly six million households across Britain now qualify for the annual discount.

For England and Wales, the department confirmed that the eligible cohort remains unchanged from the previous winter, encompassing recipients of Housing Benefit, income-related ESA, Pension Credit, and Universal Credit.
