Applications for the grants are currently open to all homeowners in England and Wales

British homeowners sweltering through the country's third heatwave this summer could receive air conditioning at no cost through a Government grant programme that many remain unaware of.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides funding of up to £2,500 towards air-to-air heat pumps, which function as cooling units during hot weather.

With temperatures forecast to reach 35C in parts of Britain today, the timing could not be more relevant for households seeking relief from the heat.

According to Checkatrade, typical installation costs for air conditioning run to approximately £1,900, meaning the grant could cover the entire expense for many properties.

These dual-purpose devices were added to the scheme in November, representing the first occasion that air conditioning units have qualified for Government support in the UK.

The grant programme is open to property owners across England and Wales who wish to apply.

Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey previously said of the scheme: "Air-to-air heat pumps offer the best of both worlds keeping you warm in winter while cooling you down when summer comes along.

"With heat pumps more popular than ever, we want to make sure as many people as possible can benefit, especially those in flats or small homes without central heating, so they have greater choice when upgrading their property."

To qualify for the funding, homeowners must be switching from a fossil fuel or conventional electric heating system to a heat pump or another eligible device covered by the grant.

The scheme excludes most newly constructed properties, social housing, and anyone who has previously received Government assistance for a heat pump or biomass boiler installation.

Those interested should first obtain quotes from an MCS certified installer, who can confirm eligibility for the programme.

The installer handles the application through the Ofgem website, with the grant value deducted directly from the final installation bill.

Full eligibility details are available on the GOV.UK website.
