The move follows years of branch closures and comes as more customers choose to bank online

The Halifax brand will disappear after more than 170 years, with Lloyds Banking Group confirming it is retiring one of Britain's best-known banking names.

Halifax customer accounts will gradually move to the Lloyds brand, ending an era for the former building society that has been part of the group since 2009.

The announcement follows reports in May that Lloyds was considering phasing out Halifax as a standalone brand.

The bank said the move reflects the growing overlap between Halifax and Lloyds, with many customers already using the same app, branches and customer service teams.

Lloyds said it will contact customers directly over the coming weeks through trusted channels, including the Halifax app, online banking, email and by letter, to explain the changes.

For customers, the changes are expected to have little practical impact.

Account numbers, sort codes and Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection will all remain the same, while customers' money will stay exactly where it is.

From 2027, Halifax branches will either be rebranded as Lloyds or customers will be served by a nearby Lloyds branch.

Lloyds Banking Group said no branches will close and no job losses are planned as part of the changes.

Founded in the West Yorkshire town of Halifax in 1853, the building society grew to become one of the UK's largest mortgage lenders before joining Lloyds Banking Group following its takeover of HBOS in 2009.

Since early 2025, customers across Lloyds Banking Group's brands have been able to use any of its branches and manage their accounts through a single app or by phone, making the distinction between Halifax and Lloyds increasingly less significant.

Halifax was founded in West Yorkshire in 1853, issuing its first mortgage before growing into one of the UK's largest building societies.

Jas Singh, Lloyds Banking Group's chief executive of consumer relationships, said: "As Halifax changes to Lloyds, our Halifax customers will keep everything they know and love today the same fantastic app design, the same friendly faces in our branches even the same sort code and account number.

"But as Lloyds customers, they'll get the best innovation and experiences we offer."

Bank of Scotland will continue operating under its own name, serving as the group's lead brand exclusively for Scottish customers.

Lloyds Banking Group has emphasised its ongoing commitment to the town of Halifax and the broader Yorkshire and Humber region.

The company recently invested £116 million in its Trinity Road office in Halifax town centre, where approximately 3,000 employees will continue working.

Once the transition is complete, former Halifax customers will gain access to several Lloyds products.

These include Club Lloyds, which offers interest on balances and no overseas debit card fees, as well as Lloyds Premier with lifestyle benefits such as cashback and a BUPA GP service.

The Lloyds app also features an AI financial coach and personalisation options.
