A Tyne and Wear saver scooped the second-largest Premium Bonds prize after buying the winning bond just four months ago
A Premium Bonds holder in Tyne and Wear has won a £100,000 prize in the August 2026 draw despite having just £650 invested.
The saver secured the second‑largest prize available after purchasing the winning bond only four months earlier in March 2026.
The £100,000 award is the highest prize below the two £1million jackpots, and the result underlines that every £1 bond carries the same chance of winning through ERNIE, NS&I’s electronic random number generator.
Both £1million jackpot winners in August were based in the south of England.
Andrew Westhead, retail director at NS&I, said: “August has a whole new outlook for two Premium Bonds holders in Kent and Hampshire & Isle of Wight, with Agent Million bringing the good news they have each won the £1million jackpot.”
He added that the Kent winner’s recent purchase shows “every £1 Bond has an equal chance of winning”.
Several small holdings also secured major prizes. One saver with just £20 invested won £50,000 from a bond purchased in July 1981.
Another holder with £30 invested also won £50,000, with the winning bond bought in December 1979.
Premium Bonds, offered by NS&I and backed by the Treasury, do not pay interest. Instead, each £1 bond is entered into a monthly prize draw, with prizes ranging from £25 to £1million.
There is no guarantee of winning, and the odds currently stand at 22,000 to one, with a prize fund rate of 3.8 per cent. Savers can invest up to £50,000.
NS&I notifies winners by email or text, and bond holders can check results using the NS&I prize checker or the Premium Bonds app.
