The changes would apply only to Tesco Express stores in England

Tesco shoppers could face an unexpected change to store opening hours this weekend.

The supermarket has confirmed it is preparing a special plan that would affect hundreds of stores across England if one key event takes place.

Tesco said it will close its Express stores across England early on Sunday evening if England qualify for the World Cup final.

The retailer confirmed the convenience stores would shut at 7.30pm, instead of their usual 10pm or 11pm closing time.

The earlier finish is intended to give employees enough time to get home or meet family and friends before the 8pm kick-off.

Staff will still be paid for their full scheduled shifts despite finishing early, Tesco said.

The changes would apply only to Tesco Express stores in England. Branches in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will continue to trade as normal.

Kevin Tindall, Managing Director of Tesco UK, said: "We appreciate just how much this would mean to so many of our colleagues.

"So if England makes it through to the final, we will close our Express stores across England in time for all colleagues to be able to celebrate with their family and friends. We will reopen as normal the following day."

Tesco's larger supermarkets would not be affected, as they are already required to close before the match because of Sunday trading laws.

The supermarket also confirmed that online grocery deliveries already booked for Sunday evening will go ahead as planned..

England must first overcome Argentina in their semi-final clash tomorrow evening, with the match scheduled for 8pm UK time.

Tonight's other last-four encounter sees France take on Spain, also kicking off at 8pm, meaning Gareth Southgate's side will know who awaits them in the final before they take to the pitch.

Should England progress, the World Cup final will take place on Sunday at 8pm.

Viewers will be able to watch the showpiece match on both BBC One and ITV1.

All Express stores will resume normal operations the morning after the final.
