A train has caught fire at near London Victoria, as passengers face extended delays to services.

Southern Rail UK confirmed that a train is on fire at Clapham Junction.

Services between Balham and London Victoria are delayed as the line is blocked, with passengers being warned of delays to the Gatwick Express.

Southern Rail have said that services will continue to run throughout the day, but will be subject to congestion and delays.

The train operator has told passengers to expect delays until at least 3pm.

Trains have been diverted to another route whilst the trainline is still blocked.

National Rail is advising travellers to allow at least an additional 20 minutes for the extra disruption.

Gatwick Express services are currently delayed by around an hour.

Users on X have expressed concern for those aboard the train.

Another said: "Crikey how did that happen? Hope no one's hurt."

The fire comes just a day after officials issued an update on the Southern Rail train that derailed last week.

An eight-carriage Southern Rail service from London Victoria to Eastbourne diverted off the tracks in Lewes just before 4pm last Thursday.

The train's onboard data recorder showed it was travelling at about 65mph as it approached the location of derailment before three carriages fell onto their side.

Around 150 passengers were trapped in the train after it fell on its side, injuring 30 passengers in the process. Twenty required hospitalisation, officials confirmed.

Three air ambulances and approximately 20 other vehicles were dispatched to the wreckage.

During preliminary investigations, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) assessed rear-facing CCTV images obtained from train services on August 13.

Officials today confirmed their findings showed a "track geometry irregularity" on the "immediate approach to the point of derailment".

The RAIB said there was also proof of previous track maintenance in the area, while it had received several reports of “rough riding” at the derailment location from former disgruntled passengers.
