The travel expert said that a return flight to Alicante could rise by around £150
Travel expert Simon Calder has warned that plans linked to the UK's net zero targets could send flight costs soaring, with return fares to popular destinations potentially increasing by hundreds of pounds.
Speaking to GB News, Mr Calder explained that the Climate Change Committee has demanded that aviation must pay a greater share of the cost of meeting the UK's climate targets.
He said this could mean significantly higher fares, with a return flight to Alicante potentially increasing by around £150, while a return trip to New York could rise by around £400.
“Very straightforwardly, the Climate Change Committee says that the only way that we can meet net zero targets is for the aviation industry to be paying more of its share,” Mr Calder said.
“The way you would do that is that you would be increasing, exactly as you say, the fares.”
According to the travel expert, the additional revenue would fund sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which has been promoted as a way to reduce aviation's environmental impact.
