A 35-year-old man has been charged after a nine-year-old girl was found dead at an industrial estate in Arbroath.

The youngster was found seriously injured in the early hours of Monday morning at the Elliot industrial estate in the Angus town.

She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died.

Three other members of her family were also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure before all were discharged.

Officers also transported the suspect separately to the same hospital, who was later discharged, taken into custody and, now, charged.

Officers launched an investigation into the tragedy on Monday, with the white Briton due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court later today.

Police Scotland confirmed they were not searching for anyone else in relation to the child's death.

The girl is said to have been camping in the area with her family, from West Yorkshire.

Detective inspector Mike Ness of Police Scotland’s major investigation team confirmed a police presence will stay in the area.

Inquiries will remain active, he said. He added: "Our thoughts remain with those affected by these events.

"A police presence will remain in the area while our inquiries continue.

"Anyone with any concerns, or information, should approach these officers or contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0008 of Monday August 3 2026."

The girl is believed to have been camping in the area with her family, who police say are being supported by specialist officers.

Lois Speed, a councillor for Arbroath East and Lunan, posted on social media, about the "heartbreaking" news.

She added: "Really just my thoughts are with the little girl and her family, and those closely affected.

"I don’t have much more that I can add or say, other just than express the shock and sympathies with everyone."

Arbroath local Dawn Reid visited the industrial estate on Monday to lay flowers in tribute to the deceased.

She said: "We’re quite devastated by the news. Our kids are just not safe anywhere, it’s just heartbreaking.”

She continued: "I just wish them all the best. She’s got a long road ahead of her that poor mum.
