A forensic post-mortem performed on Monday confirmed the newborn girl had died of stab wounds

Two men and two women have been charged with murder after a newborn baby girl was stabbed to death in Sheffield, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice.

The baby was found at a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area, northeast Sheffield, after police were called over concerns for the newborn's safety at 5.58am on Sunday.

Andrea Skopova, 20, Peter Horvath Jnr, 19, Peter Horvath Snr, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37, have been charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice by taking steps to conceal the killing of an infant, the CPS has said.

The defendants remain in custody and will appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court today.

Lauren Costello, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor at CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute four individuals with murder following a police investigation into the death of a newborn baby girl in the Wincobank area.

"A fifth person has also been charged with perverting the course of justice.

"Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.

"We have worked carefully with South Yorkshire Police as they carried out their investigation.

"We remind all concerned that proceedings against the defendants are active and they have the right to a fair trial.

"It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in anyway prejudice these proceedings."

In the early hourse of Sunday, paramedics and police gave their best efforts to save the baby girl, but she sadly died at the scene.

A forensic post-mortem examination conducted on Monday confirmed the newborn died from stab wounds.

Initially, seven people were arrested on suspicion of murder, but two of these people, aged 26 and 37, were later released on bail.

Police obtained a warrant to keep the remaining five in custody for longer as their investigation continued.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward, who is leading the investigation, said yesterday: "We recognise this is deeply distressing for those who would have loved to have a chance to love this baby girl, for the emergency services who responded and for the community who will inevitably be shocked by this incident.

"Everyone involved in responding to this tragedy - from the first officers and paramedics on the scene to the detectives now leading the investigation - has felt the profound impact of this investigation."

He continued: "Our commitment to this little girl is unwavering.

"We will confront every difficult and distressing challenge and pursue every line of inquiry with determination and care to secure justice for her.

"We know the local community will hold her in their thoughts and support us as we work through this complex investigation."

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said officers were continuing their investigation and appealed to anyone with information to contact them.

The CPS released the following details on the four arrested for murder: Andrea Skopova, born on June 20, 2006, is formerly of Robey Street; Peter Horvath Jnr, born on February 10, 2007, is of Holywell Heights, Sheffield; Peter Horvath Snr, born on March 31, 1988, is also of Holywell Heights; and Nina Horvathova, born on December 14, 1988, is likewise of Holywell Heights.
