There was no match found for the individual on the national DNA database

Detectives in Merseyside have failed to identify a woman who was found dead in a busy Liverpool park, two weeks after her remains were discovered.

Officers were called to Stanley Park at around 5.25pm on Friday, August 28, when the body of a woman in her 70s was discovered in a black bin bag in a walled garden.

However, Merseyside Police has now been able to rule out 73 names supplied to them by concerned members of the public.

Forensic tests and repeated public appeals from officers have failed to lead to an identification of the woman.

The woman's body was discovered in bushes by a walled garden in Stanley Park, between Liverpool's Anfield and Everton's Goodison Park football grounds.

Officers believe the bag had been there for several weeks before it was found.

The woman has been described as white, believed to be around 70 years old, approximately 5ft 2in tall and of slight build, with strawberry blonde hair.

She was found wearing what detectives described as a "distinctive" pink Nike T-shirt.

A spokesman from Merseyside Police said: "To date, we have been unable to identify the woman despite repeated public appeals.

"Following forensic tests, we have been able to establish a DNA profile for the woman, but there is no match on the national DNA database. It has also not been possible to compare dental records."

"So far, we have received 160 reports from members of the public and have eliminated 73 people from our enquiries after concerns were raised for people matching the description of the woman.

"We are continuing to appeal for people to come forward with any information to help identify the woman."

Detectives from Merseyside Police have been gathering CCTV and forensic evidence.

Officers have also spoken to residents in 625 properties surrounding the park and recovered footage from 30 private and commercial cameras in the area.

A post-mortem examination took place last week, the results of which police have not yet shared.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald said: "Our investigation remains ongoing and we remain determined to identify the woman and find the person or persons responsible for her murder.

"We are actively pursuing every call we receive to ensure that people are seen to be safe and well and can be eliminated from our enquiries.

"We are continuing to appeal for anyone who has been in the area of Stanley Park over recent weeks who has seen anything suspicious to contact us.

"(We're also) asking anyone who may have flown a drone over the park over the past couple of months to check their footage for anything significant."

The woman had no tattoos and was not wearing jewellery, reports The Echo.

In the days since she was found, floral tributes have been left near the site in Stanley Park.

One note read: "We as a community are united in grief and deep sorrow for you.

"May you find the peace and justice you so deserve. Safe now in the arms of the angels and forever at rest."
