The club may need to set up a GoFundMe to cover repair costs
A group of travellers with 20 caravans broke into Thetford Town Youth FC's grounds on Mundford Road last Friday afternoon, forcing their way through by destroying locks and causing damage to the main entrance gate.
The unauthorised occupants arrived at approximately 3pm and proceeded to drive vehicles repeatedly across the club's match pitches over the following days.
The group remained on site until Sunday evening, finally departing at around half past seven.
During their occupation, club volunteers maintained a constant presence to safeguard the facilities, with chairman Nigel Armes stating they had been "on full alert" throughout the ordeal.
Upon leaving, the travellers abandoned a trailer filled with waste, ranging from discarded cans to soiled nappies.
The damage to the playing surfaces represents the club's most significant concern. "The biggest problem was them running cars over the pitches because it is going to cost thousands to repair," Mr Armes said.
The financial blow is particularly severe given the youth club had spent approximately £5,000 just two months earlier on pitch preparation work, including drill seeding and fertilisation ahead of the upcoming season.
Mr Armes described this investment as having been "kind of wasted" due to the extensive repairs now required.
The club is now considering launching a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the substantial repair costs.
Mr Armes expressed gratitude to those who helped protect the site during the incident. "We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all the volunteers who have dedicated their time over the past few days and nights," he said.
"Your commitment, vigilance, and willingness to go above and beyond for the club are greatly appreciated."
Police officers attended the scene and engaged with the group while they remained on the field.
Breckland Council responded promptly to the situation, issuing a warrant without delay.
