Some 850,000 fireworks are thought to have been lit over DC alone

Washington DC basked in the glow of what Donald Trump billed as the "largest fireworks show in history" last night as America celebrated 250 years of independence.

Some 850,000 fireworks are thought to have been lit over DC in a bid to break the world record for shells used in a fireworks show.

Freedom250, the White House task force behind the celebrations, promised it would be be a moment Americans will "remember for the rest of their lives".

"In 2026, generations of Americans will look up at the sky and remember the incredible sights of the 250th anniversary," Freedom250 vowed.

The record is currently held by a church in the Philippines, which used 810,904 fireworks.

GB News has handpicked the very best of the photos from the historic show - as well as highlights from across the US on the nation's big day.
