Journalist David Shipley has warned that Shabana Mahmood's plan to have members of the public oversee asylum appeals will be "dominated" by "migration activists".
Speaking to GB News, Mr Shipley said: "I think I would probably trust the the average member of the great British public actually to be better than the average migration judge. But I think the problem with this system is it will not be 12 average people.
"It will be no doubt dominated by a migration activists who will aggressively pursue these jobs. They will be keen to let everyone in, and it will be, I think, probably even worse than we have now, because they will still be bound by the Human Rights Act framework, the equality law, which applies sometimes to migration cases as well. All of that is still going to apply here.
"So they'll have to take the same decisions, and presumably there will be routes for legal challenge if these independent boards have somehow broken the law."
