Officers attended the scene in Burscough after a train had struck a van at a level crossing
A man has died after a train collided with a van in West Lancashire.
British Transport Police (BTP) said they were called at 3.18pm on Saturday to reports a train had struck a van at a level crossing in Burscough.
One person was in the van and a man was pronounced dead at the scene, BTP said.
Two passengers from the train received treatment for minor injuries, according to the force.
A BTP spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened, any witnesses who haven’t already spoken to police are asked to text BTP on 61016 quoting the reference 373 of August 29."
In a post on X, Network Rail said trains were suspended between Southport and Manchester as emergency services responded to an incident at Martins Lane level crossing in Burscough, between New Lane and Bescar Lane stations.
National Rail said on its website that all lines were closed between Wigan Wallgate and Southport, with disruption expected to continue throughout the rest of Saturday and buses replacing train services.
Replacement buses are in operation between Wigan Wallgate and Southport this evening.
A spokesman from rail operator Northern said: "Please check station information posters for the location of the bus pick-up points and be advised that bicycles, e-bikes and dogs (except for service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport.
"Journey times may be extended by up to 60 minutes whilst travelling by road transport."
