Donald Trump has told GB News he will “settle” the dispute between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands.
Answering a question from Bev Turner during his visit to Ireland, the US leader said he would likely have to wade into it to prevent a “potential disaster”.
His comments come as Argentinian President Javier Milei has renewed his country’s claim to the British territory it failed to conquer during the 1982 Falklands War.
“Well, the Falkland Islands are very interesting because here we go again,” Mr Trump began.
“I remember, as a young boy - a pretty young boy, anyway - the Falkland Islands, and I think it was a different country at that time, the UK, a little bit.
“They went in, and they took it over. I'm not sure that they're doing that. They have a bit of a problem with immigration.
“So I don't know. I don't know if they're going to be willing to travel that far. That is very far away.
“I'm sure I'll be called into that potential disaster. But if they do, I'll probably be able to settle, settle it out.

“But right now you have two countries that are not happy concerning the Falklands.”
His remarks come as Mr Milei reignited tensions over the islands, declaring they were “Argentinian” and branded the British territory “our future” during a national address earlier this month.
“The Falklands are Argentinian. Historically and legally. There can be no argument. They are part of the Argentine territory,” he said in the televised speech.
Mr Milei warned his country's claim to the British territory faced a “clear and present danger", as he accused the UK of “failing to heed” United Nations calls not to take “unilateral actions” on the islands.

| GETTY“For more than 50 years, the United Nations has been calling on Argentina and the United Kingdom not to undertake unilateral actions on the territory of the islands until the dispute is resolved, including the use of their national resources.
“However, the United Kingdom has systematically failed to heed that call.”
Mr Trump’s comments in Ireland echoed those he made in a world exclusive interview with GB News in Washington.
“Well look, I was there when they had the first war,” he began.

He said: “That was a long time ago, and I watched it so carefully, and you comported yourselves very well.
“You took it back pretty strongly, but it's a long way away. That's a big trip; it's a long way," he said.
