Every British citizen deserves to be safe, but the difference between Harry and Meghan and the rest of us is that they can afford to keep themselves safe, writes the GB News columnist

Why in God's name should Harry and Meghan – who flounced out of Britain six years ago, trashing it as a racist, toxic cesspit – dare to imagine they can come back here and have their security paid for by the British taxpayers, the very people they slated as racist?

Why should WE have to pay for the whims of this self-interested, supremely selfish couple who, with no warning, have suddenly announced they're coming back here?

Quite apart from the fact over a third of Brits don't want them back, according to a recent poll, they sure as Hell don't want to have to cough up for their security which, we're told, is under review as we speak.

But is it already a done deal? This week we have Lord Blunkett saying publicly they should get a "limited" level of it and Dame Emily Thornberry saying: "They deserve to be safe."

Yes, Ms Thornberry, we all deserve to be safe, but none of us are safe thanks to this Government spewing tens of thousands of killers and rapists back onto our streets.

In the US, it's rumoured they pay a stonking £2million a year for security, so why can't they do it here and save hard-up Brits from having to carry the burden that is rightfully theirs?

And frankly, why should our taxes be spent looking after two people who left this country because they hated it? They called it a "prison from which they had to escape". They accused the British people of being racists. Harry accused his own family of suffering an "unconscious race bias." Both said they couldn't stomach the pressures of life here, couldn't stand the media attention. They talked about the monarchy like it was a great weight around their necks dragging them down and holding them back.

They wanted freedom and financial independence and didn't want to be in the same orbit, the same country as the royals. And so, they fled to chase their American Dream.

Yet now they're crawling back here, their American Dream in tatters, with talk that the people and the country they trashed having to potentially stump up for their security.

But if Harry or Meghan aren't going to be working royals – which they aren't – why do they imagine they're entitled to it?

Other non-working royals like Peter Phillips, Zara Tindall, Beatrice and Eugenie don't get that kind of protection so why should Harry and Meghan?

"Because he's the son of the King and he's served his country," they cry.

Yes, lots of people have served their country, but they don't get 24-hour police protection. As for him being the King's son – Yes, he is, but he made it quite clear years ago that he wanted to go live in a different country as a private citizen and make his own way in the world.

What IS odd is that for years Harry and Meghan have been saying it's not safe to bring their kids Archie and Lilibet here – so what's changed? Has Harry already been given the nod that he's finally going to get his 24-hour protection? He has repeatedly said he'd never come back to Britain without it. Remember that quote: "I don't see a world where I would bring my wife and children back to the UK" That was just 15 months ago. And as the Government, backed by the courts, has repeatedly refused to give them that security – why are they now coming back?

Is it, as has been rumoured, that Meghan's got some acting work here in Blighty? Or is it simply because in the U.S., the pair are now a busted flush? Their big money deals have dried up, the Hollywood A-listers have dumped them, they're seen as grifters who sold the Royal Family for a fast buck. But most importantly their USP was their royal gloss which has all but worn off now, bearing in mind they've barely been in contact with the Windsor "Mothership" for years.

But of course, coming back here would change all that. They desperately need the royal platform that just being close to the royals would give them. They know the high esteem in which the world holds the royal family and that would, by proxy, rub off on them and so would re-invigorate their brand.

Just the odd photograph with the King and Queen Camilla would do it. They're never going to get a happy snap with Wills and Kate, but the fact they might be moving in the same circles as them would be enough to get Brand Sussex back on its feet.

And if that's what this move is all about, it's all the more reason Brits should absolutely not be paying for their security, which could cost upwards of £5million a year. That WOULD stick in the public craw. As was proved by a poll this week which said that 68 per cent of people believe the Sussexes should fork out for their own security, and the reason for that is that we're all sick to death of their shenanigans.

But I still don't get why coming back to a country they trashed as non-working royals should entitle them to taxpayer-funded protection. Like I said, in the US they pay £2million a year, and America is a damn sight more dangerous than Britain. If their own private security is enough for them there, why can't it be here? And let's face it, in terms of risk, we have politicians in this country who are in more danger than Harry and Meghan.

But there are those who suspect that the decision to give the pair taxpayer-funded security has already been made because it was just a month ago the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) ordered a new risk assessment on the Sussexes.

If that IS the case, Brits would quite rightly be outraged at the bare-faced cheek of it – having to pay for the security of this couple while they beaver away trying to make millions in their capacity as "private" citizens.

Harry and Meghan have already insulted the British people enough. But this would be the biggest insult of all!
