She will concede to the nation at Howard University later today

Kamala Harris has conceded the election to Trump, ringing the new 47th President hours after victory was declared.

Speaking to the president-elect, Harris issued both congratulations and words of warning.

“She discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans,” a senior Harris aide said.

She will deliver her concession speech to supporters in Washington at Howard University, at 4.00pm local (9.00pm UK time).

Meanwhile, Trump is spending his day laying low, taking a series of calls from foreign leaders and CEOs from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, two close sources told CNN.

During the phone call, he agreed with Harris "on the importance of unifying the country", and congratulated her on her "strength" throughout the race, his campaign has said.

“President Donald J Trump and vice-president Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier today where she congratulated him on his historic victory.

"President Trump acknowledged vice-president Harris on her strength, professionalism, and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of unifying the country,” campaign communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Trump now has 294 electoral votes to Harris' 223. It takes 270 to win the presidency.

Declaring victory earlier in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump told his supporters: "We're going to help our country heal.

"We have a country that needs help, and it needs help very badly. We're going to fix our borders. We're going to fix everything about our country and we've made history for a reason tonight."

Trump was making gains in every corner of the country as he delivered his speech with the Republican earning a bigger share of the vote than he did four years ago.

The increased support reflected a broad shift in Americans’ support for the president they ousted four years ago.

"If I lose an election, if it's a fair election, I'm gonna be the first one to acknowledge it," he told reporters.
