Michelle Dewberry was left stunned after Conservative MP David Reed claimed a “heating planet” was causing small boat crossings.

The heated exchange erupted when the Exmouth and Exeter East representative was challenged on his party’s record on migration.

Michelle accused the Conservatives of creating “what many people regard as open borders Britain”.

The MP batted away the accusation, stressing that the UK was facing a wider European problem.

“I think we are seeing a problem right across Western Europe,” Mr Reed said.

“These problems are not individual to the UK... they're all experiencing similar things.”

The Tory MP then argued climate change was one of the long-term drivers behind migration.

“If you just look at a heating planet, you look at equatorial regions heating up. Migration is born,” he said.

"You're not telling me these guys are coming over the Channel because they're a bit hot?"

Defending his argument, the Tory MP said he had worked in the field before entering Parliament and insisted climate was “a contributing factor”.

“A heating planet leads to more violence. People then are on the move,” he said.

Mr Reed argued that migration was also being “weaponised” by hostile states, including Russia.

“So if that's the reality that we're facing, then there needs to be really strong measures in place to deter people from coming into our country.”

Mr Reed stressed the UK Government should “have the power to do that”.

To that end, the Tory MP stressed the importance of leaving the ECHR as the UK was “not in a position to reform it”.

“We have to leave that treaty in order to be able to have full control over who comes into the country and who we can say needs to be deported.”
