The President of the US and the First Lady departed Windsor Castle by car after having lunch

Donald Trump and Melania Trump laid a wreath at Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb this afternoon.

The President of the US and the First Lady departed Windsor Castle by car after having lunch with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The Trumps arrived at St George’s Chapel and were greeted by the Dean of Windsor, Rev Christopher Cocksworth and the Chapter Clerk, Miss Charlotte Manley.

The President and First Lady were given a tour of the Quire before they returned to Windsor Castle by car ahead of the State Banquet tonight.

King Charles will host the traditional white tie state banquet this evening, during which both the monarch and President Trump will deliver speeches.

The US President declared it a “great honour” to visit the royal chapel where the late Queen Elizabeth II is buried, after paying his respects at her tomb.

The Trump spent around 10 minutes privately at the late monarch’s final resting place during the second day of their State Visit to the UK.

Donald Trump had previously described Queen Elizabeth II in her lifetime as “a spectacular woman” and someone with whom he had a good rapport.

During their tour of the chapel on Wednesday, the Trumps were told it contains the tombs of 11 monarchs, including the late Queen, Henry VIII and Charles I.

St George's Chapel is historic for the Royal Family and has been the venue of several weddings and funerals.

In 2018, it was where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who now live in the US, held their wedding.
