Queen Sonja faces an especially heartbreaking weekend as Saturday marks what would have been her 58th wedding anniversary with King Harald V, who died yesterday at the age of 89.

The Norwegian Palace confirmed the monarch's passing on Friday, stating: "It is with deep sorrow that we announce that His Majesty King Harald passed away today.

"King Harald passed away peacefully at Rikshospitalet on Friday, August 28, at 06:35."

King Charles III was among those who led the tributes, describing him as "my dear cousin," adding that Harald "served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility."

Football superstar Erling Haaland also sent his condolences to the Royal Household, writing: "Rest in peace, King Harald. Thank you for everything you meant to Norway. It was an honour to meet you".

Harald and Sonja's two children, the newly acceded King Haakon VIII and Princess Martha Louise, are expected to offer their mother private comfort during this profoundly difficult period as the family also turns its attention to funeral preparations.

The couple's romance was one of the great royal love stories of the 20th century, though it began under extraordinary constraints.

Harald and Sonja first encountered one another at a party in 1959, but his father, King Olav V, refused to permit his son to wed a woman without royal blood.

For nine years, the pair concealed their relationship from the public eye. A recent Prime Video Norway dramatisation of their story, released in February, carried the tagline: "The true story of love so powerful it threatened the Norwegian monarchy."

As the sole heir to the Norwegian throne, Harald's potential abdication for love would have brought his dynasty's reign to an end entirely.

Olav ultimately relented, and the couple's engagement was declared on 19 March 1968. In a gesture that spoke volumes, the King himself escorted Sonja down the aisle at Oslo Cathedral five months later.

The bride wore an elegant high-necked silk gown by Molstad, with flowers adorning her hair.

Both Harald and Sonja later acknowledged that the years of secrecy had placed considerable strain on their relationship.

Yet they also recognised that this prolonged trial had forged an unusually resilient bond between them.

Those hidden years, painful as they were, gave the couple what they described as a solid foundation - one that would sustain them through decades of public life and the immense responsibilities that lay ahead.

When Harald ascended to the throne in January 1991 following his father's death, Sonja made history as Norway's first Queen Consort from a non-royal background in 68 years.

Over the course of his 35-year reign, the King was known to speak warmly and frequently of his wife's unwavering support.

Perhaps the most moving testament to their enduring devotion came at their joint 80th birthday celebrations, when Sonja quoted Gabriel García Márquez: "Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom."
