Mike Tapp has called for a “prompt” decision on Prince Harry’s security as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue their return visits to Britain.
Speaking to GB News royal correspondent Cameron Walker, the former migration minister insisted an individual’s protection must be based on the threat they face, not public opinion or their wealth.
“This sort of protection is not based on the wealth of an individual. It's based on the risk and threat that they face,” he said.
The Dover and Deal MP said the Duke’s status meant there could be an “enduring threat” against him and his family.
“Of course, he's the son of the King. He's one of the most recognisable faces in the world. And of course, he's a high-profile veteran,” Mr Tapp said.
The comments come as the Home Office considers whether Harry and his family should receive police protection while in the UK.
Mr Tapp stressed the decision must remain independent, but urged officials to act quickly.
“I would urge them to make a prompt decision on this,” he said.
“It has to be independent, and it has to look at the evidence. Is there a threat to Prince Harry and his family?”
He warned delays could themselves increase the risk to the Sussexes as they establish routines during their time in Britain.
“Now that they're in the country, they will start setting patterns,” he said, citing activities such as taking their children to school and social engagements.
Mr Tapp also rejected the argument the cost to taxpayers should determine whether Harry receives protection.
“It has to be based on the threat that they are facing,” he said.
Mr Tapp added private security was no substitute for police protection, pointing to the intelligence and specialist resources available to the state.
