Prince George celebrated his 13th birthday this week, and to mark it, Kensington Palace, as is tradition, released a new portrait of the youngster, which drew stark comparisons to his father, the Prince of Wales.
However, entering their teens, George and William's experience could not have been more different.
The Princess of Wales no doubt arranged a cake for George this year, yet whatever confection awaited the second in line to the throne, it is almost certainly a far cry from the scandalous creation William's late mother Princess Diana once presented him.
Precisely 31 years ago, when a young William entered his teenage years, Diana orchestrated a gloriously mischievous surprise that reportedly left her eldest son thoroughly embarrassed - a moment that has since become one of the most endearing anecdotes from his childhood.
Rather than opting for a classic Victoria sponge or a novelty caterpillar cake, Diana instead arranged a decidedly risqué creation that would make her son turn "bright red."
Former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady recounted the moment to Hello: "I came into work that morning and went down to the refrigerator, opened the door and I was just confronted with the biggest pair of boobs I've ever seen in my life.
"The Princess had ordered a boobs cake for William's 13th birthday."
Mr McGrady added: "The Princess loved embarrassing people in the nicest way, in a fun way, whether it was telling a dirty, risqué joke - which usually got me.
Prince Harry, then 10, reportedly had an altogether different reaction - he loved the cake and apparently asked for one of his own.
In contrast, on George's birthday, Kensington Palace shared beach footage captured during their Easter getaway to Cornwall.
In the clip, filmed in the south west of England, George can be seen sporting sunglasses while waving and grinning at the camera, batting in a game of beach cricket, and scrambling over rocks without shoes alongside his younger brother Prince Louis.

His parents posted the footage on social media with the message: "Thank you for all the birthday wishes for George today!"
Sharp-eyed observers noticed a watch on George's wrist during the footage, identified as the £569.99 Garmin D2 Air X15 - a smartwatch designed with aviation enthusiasts in mind.
George is known to be passionate about flying, having visited RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire with Catherine, where he was spotted effortlessly entering the cockpit of a fighter jet.
Like his father, with George entering his teens he also prepares to up sticks and move to Eton College, the esteemed all-boys institution in Windsor.
Both William and Prince Harry were educated there during their youths.
He will arrive on September 8 alongside friends from Lambrook and familiar faces from the prep-school sporting circuit.
