Catherine's younger brother took to Instagram to capture the once-in-a-generation moment

James Middleton, the younger brother of the Princess of Wales, shared an adorable picture of his young son watching the solar eclipse this evening.

According to Royal Museums Greenwich, the UK's most significant solar eclipse since 1999 took place on Wednesday - and it gripped the nation.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon blocks sunlight by moving between the Earth and the Sun, casting a small shadow on the Earth for a brief period.

In London, around 90 per cent of the sun was covered by the moon - though it was not a total eclipse, meaning, despite drops in light and temperatures, it did not fall completely dark.

Space enthusiasts will have to wait until 2050 for the next deep partial solar eclipse, while the next total solar eclipse visible from the UK is not expected until 2090.

So, crowds across the country gathered between 6pm and 8.15pm to witness the once-in-a-generation moment as the moon crossed over the sun, creating the extraordinarily rare phenomenon.

Joining the crowd was James, along with his two-year-old son Inigo, who appeared to be sitting on a football and pointing as the sun beamed through.

Young Inigo was flanked by two dogs and had a puppy toy in front of him, evidently following in his father's footsteps with his love for canines.

James' followers took to the comments to laud James' photography skills - and how adorable his young son is.

"Great photo, definitely one for a frame. It seems photography skills run in the family," one fan gleamed.

"3 beautiful Goldens," another said, noting both the dog's golden coat and Inigo's blonde hair.

James has previously gone on record to discuss the bond his parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, share with his son, Inigo.

"I'm very fortunate to have my parents and that they're able to help support [in caring for Inigo]," he said, noting that being a grandparent represents a distinct role from parenting.

"I have wonderful childhood memories of my grandparents and of activities that we used to do with them, and I hope that Inigo generates the same sort of memories with my parents."

He also noted that Inigo already joins James and his wife Alizee Thevenet on "some of the adventures that we go on with the dogs".
