Duchess of Edinburgh makes major move to protect future of British farming

Sophie is spending two days in Cumbria to focus on the topic

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh travelled to Cumbria on Tuesday to begin a packed two-day programme centred on the rural economy and young people working in farming.

Among her engagements was a visit to Home Grown Here, a grower-owned co-operative and local food marketplace, where she learned about community-driven approaches to sustainable food production and regional supply chains.

The Duchess also formally launched a new initiative aimed at helping first-generation farmers obtain tenancies and gain a foothold in the industry.

During the trip, she met with representatives from the Royal Countryside Fund.

Sophie has served as patron of the Addington Fund since 2021.

Her agricultural interests extend well beyond this week's Cumbria engagements.

The Duchess has held the role of patron of the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations since 2012, a connection that sees her regularly attend major rural events across the country.

In July, she was present at the Royal Welsh Show, a four-day gathering encompassing livestock and equine competitions alongside displays of food, horticulture and rural skills.

She also counts numerous food and farming bodies among her official royal patronages, reflecting a deep and sustained commitment to the sector.

The Cumbria trip is very much in keeping with that longstanding dedication to British agriculture.

Earlier this summer, the Duchess penned a rare personal essay for The Yorkshire Post in which she made the case for the importance of Britain's agricultural shows.

"Agricultural shows are a place where town can meet country, bridging the gap between what is perceived and what is real," she wrote.

"They are a looking-glass into the lives of our rural community who work so hard to provide for us, while trying to make a living for themselves."

The piece underscored her belief that such events play a vital role in connecting urban and rural Britain, a theme that clearly continues to shape her public engagements.
