The Red Bull star's future remains shrouded in uncertainty

Max Verstappen's long-term future has once again become one of Formula One's biggest talking points, but both McLaren and Mercedes have poured cold water on suggestions they are preparing moves for the four-time world champion.

Speculation over Verstappen's position at Red Bull has intensified despite the Dutchman remaining under contract until the end of the 2028 season, with questions continuing to swirl over whether performance clauses could allow him to leave earlier.

However, McLaren chief executive Zak Brown insists the reigning constructors' champions have no intention of breaking up their current driver pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Brown made it clear he is fully committed to both drivers, although he admitted any team would inevitably be interested in a driver of Verstappen's calibre if circumstances unexpectedly changed.

Speaking during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, Brown said: "Well, I'd be very surprised if Oscar or Lando went elsewhere as they are very happy.

"You know, we've got contracts but even contracts aside, they are very happy here and we are very happy with them.

"If for some strange reason, someone slipped on a banana peel getting out of the tub then yeah, of course, Max is a four-time World Champion."

Both Norris and Piastri remain tied to long-term contracts, with the Australian believed to be committed until at least the end of the 2027 campaign.

Although McLaren have not consistently matched the dominant form that delivered both world championships last season, there has been little indication either driver is considering a move away from the Woking-based outfit.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was also asked about Verstappen's future and delivered a similarly firm response.

The Silver Arrows have regularly been linked with the Red Bull ace over recent seasons, but Wolff insisted he remains satisfied with his current line-up of George Russell and highly rated rookie Kimi Antonelli.

"We don't want to change things," Wolff said. "We have said also to George, this is a line up that is good for us – very happy with the two of them... Kimi is clearly very fast, that's why we hired him, and George the same."

While rumours continue to dominate headlines away from the circuit, Verstappen responded in the best possible fashion on track.

The Dutchman produced arguably his strongest display of the season at the Red Bull Ring, charging from fifth on the grid to finish second after narrowly missing out on victory by less than two seconds.

The performance offered further encouragement that Red Bull's latest upgrades are beginning to close the gap to their rivals.

Verstappen comfortably had the measure of Ferrari throughout the race and showed the pace to battle Mercedes on equal terms, reigniting hope that Red Bull can still mount a challenge during the remainder of the campaign.

Team principal Laurent Mekies also sought to end the speculation, insisting Verstappen has made his intentions clear despite persistent reports surrounding possible exit clauses in his contract.

"Max has made clear to us that he wants to continue with the team," Mekies said.

"It's equally clear that he needs a fast car for him to be happy with the team."

"As I said a few weeks ago, we're not asking Max every week. He's pushing with us, he's helping us to find the right development path for the car.

"It's not a topic for us. The topic for us is to get the car back to where we want it to be."
