Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed that "this will be my last World Cup" as the Portuguese star prepares to face Spain.
Ronaldo, 41, will feature against the European Champions in Portugal's last-16 clash, bidding for a quarter-final spot against either the USA or Belgium.
This will be the footballing icon's last throw of the dice at winning the World Cup, after saying he will not feature in 2030.
When asked about his future, Ronaldo said: "I'm not doing too bad.
"You have been trying to kill me for the past 23 years, but you must have seen that is not worth it, it's a waste of time, but you try and try and try and try and try.
"As I said before, [I will stop] when I choose, not when you choose. You always ask the same question.
"This will be my last World Cup, but let's hope tomorrow isn't my last game."
Ronaldo's time as captain and leader of his nation is drawing to a close, with him seven months from turning 42.

He was subbed off against Croatia as Portugal won 2-1, with Goncalo Ramos, who replaced Ronaldo up top, scoring the winning goal.
Ronaldo appeared unhappy when replaced, despite it proving to be the right decision by Roberto Martinez.

Ronaldo has scored three times so far at this World Cup, including a brace against Uzbekistan in the group stages.
The Portuguese icon finished superbly against Croatia as the ball came over his head, taking it down on the move and flicking past an oncoming Dominik Livakovic.
His celebrations from the fantastic goal were short-lived, as the linesman's flag went up on the far side.

He did not have to wait long for his goal, after Renato Veiga was pulled down in the penalty area.
After a VAR check, Portugal were awarded a penalty, which Ronaldo stepped up and converted.
The game was not without its controversy, with Josko Gvardiol thinking he had scored the equaliser to send the match to extra time.
Following a lengthy VAR check, an offside was given in the build-up, meaning Portugal will face Spain.
