ANALYSIS: GB News Sports Editor Jack Otway takes a look at the prolific 32-year-old ahead of tonight's match with Panama

In previous World Cups, big names have gone missing.

Think Wayne Rooney, who managed just one goal across three tournament appearances with England. Marco Van Basten, one of the finest players of his generation, failed to shine for the Netherlands in 1990. Even Sweden icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to get on the scoresheet while gracing the biggest stage of all.

Fortunately, England have never had that issue with Harry Kane.

The forward took his tally to 10 World Cup goals on matchday one against Croatia, bagging a brilliant brace to give the Three Lions a breathtaking start.

Kane's goal glut started all the way back in 2018 and he's always delivered the goods ever since.

He also has a respectable seven strikes at European Championships as well, with England making two finals with him at the tip of their attack.

But with other top players clicking into gear at this summer's showpiece event, it's clear England need the 32-year-old more than ever before.

Just about every superstar has written their names up in lights, leaving the Golden Boot race delictately poised.

Lionel Messi has led the charge, with the Argentina icon scoring five times. Though 39, the Inter Miami star remains as mercurial as ever and looks just as good as he did three-and-a-half years ago, when they went all the way in Qatar.

Algeria and Austria have been his victims and Jordan are up next. Already ahead of Miroslav Klose in the World Cup history books, more goals are expected.

Hot on his heels are Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Erling Haaland and Ousmane Dembele. The quartet, four of the biggest names in the planet, have 16 goals between them.

Mbappe has been breathtaking from the start, with the France star moving on from a turbulent season at Real Madrid.

Haaland has adjusted seamlessly on his maiden World Cup, while Vinicius Jr and Dembele have brought their own impressive club form onto the international stage.

Many were quick to dismiss Cristiano Ronaldo as a faded force after his struggles against DR Congo in Portugal's opening match.

Yet the 41-year-old responded in emphatic fashion, silencing his critics with a brace against Uzbekistan earlier in the week.

Morocco's Ismael Saibari, Brazil's Matheus Cunha and Germany's Deniz Undav are among the players to keep an eye on as well.

As far as England are concerned, Kane holds the key to glory this summer.

Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke are all talented players. Yet it's Kane who is the main man, rather than the leading cast.

His brace against Croatia was proof of his remarkable talent but the Bayern star struggled to make his mark against Ghana on Tuesday.

At the World Cup of the Galactico, England will be desperately hoping Kane steps up, starting with Panama tonight.
