A commentator has been banned from the World Cup after launching an astonishing on-air tirade following Miguel Almiron's controversial red card during Paraguay's victory over Turkey.
Paraguay boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stages with a hard-fought 1-0 win in their second group match, but the contest was overshadowed by an unprecedented dismissal for former Newcastle winger Almiron.
The 32-year-old became the first player in World Cup history to be sent off for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent.
FIFA introduced the regulation ahead of the tournament as part of a wider effort to combat racist, discriminatory and abusive language, preventing players from concealing comments made to rivals and match officials.
Paraguay had already established a lead when Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton produced the red card, leaving Almiron's team-mates to negotiate almost an entire half with 10 men.
The decision sparked fury from Paraguayan commentator Jorge Vera, who unleashed a blistering attack on the referee, FIFA and several of football's most powerful figures during his live broadcast.
"Thief, thief, Barton," Vera shouted. "They killed football. FIFA, you killed football. Infantino, you're responsible for this."

The veteran broadcaster continued his criticism by accusing football's governing body of ruining the sport.
"FIFA, take responsibility for turning football into this," he said. "A disgrace. You should be ashamed, Infantino."
Vera's anger did not end there as he turned his attention towards CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez.

The commentator also questioned whether Almiron could realistically have been guilty of using discriminatory language.
"What kind of racism could Miguel Almiron possibly use against the Turkish player?" Vera said. "Show me some common sense."
Despite Paraguay hanging on for a vital victory, the fallout from Vera's comments has continued to dominate discussion.

FIFA have now revoked his accreditation for the remainder of the tournament, meaning he will no longer be permitted to work from World Cup venues.
However, Paraguayan broadcaster ABC Cardinal has appealed for the sanction to be reconsidered, insisting the punishment is excessive given that Vera apologised shortly after the incident and admitted his conduct was unacceptable.In a strongly-worded statement, the station argued that a tournament-long suspension was disproportionate.
"We believe that the permanent cancellation of a credential for the entire duration of the tournament constitutes an extreme and manifestly disproportionate sanction for a primary infraction that was immediately acknowledged, for which formal apologies and concrete mechanisms for redress were offered," the statement read.
Whether FIFA soften their stance remains to be seen.
