Maja Chwalinska's Wimbledon campaign came to a devastating end when the Polish star slipped at the baseline while standing just one point away from victory.
The 24-year-old, who reached the Roland Garros final earlier this month, had been commanding against Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew, holding a 6-2, 5-2 lead with match point at 40-30.
However, the 20th seed lost her footing and immediately injured her right ankle, visibly wincing as she attempted to move.
Despite receiving medical treatment and having the ankle strapped, Chwalinska's mobility was severely compromised.
Sawangkaew capitalised ruthlessly, claiming the second set without conceding another game before completing a remarkable 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 comeback.
The French Open finalist expressed her devastation following the agonising defeat.
She said: "I'm definitely very disappointed.
"I was one point from winning a match. But I'll get through it. I didn't want to retire in Wimbledon."

The world number four said: "I definitely wanted to redeem myself a bit.
"(A) little extra nerves or pressure today, as well, just with that in mind, but then also motivation at the same time."

The 30-year-old exited the competition after losing 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (10-4) in a captivating game, with the American producing some incredible shots.
