With the help of AI, Google has released over 1,000 bug fixes in a month — more than the last 23 updates to Chrome combined

That's according to plans announced by Google, which has promised to revolutionise the roll-out of its critical software updates to the billions of people who rely on its popular web browser. The Californian company has developed a new dynamic patching system that applies security updates without the need to close the application.

Restarting your web browser is a real hassle: it interrupts your workflow, you could lose open tabs and windows, and unsaved data could vanish, to name just a few reasons. It's why so many of us put it off. According to Google, most of us delay critical software updates by up to 12 days because we'd need to restart our Chrome browser.

That's 12 days when your device is still vulnerable to hackers — despite having downloaded the necessary fix.

Fortunately, Google has a fix up its sleeve. And it will impact hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Google Chrome is the most popular browser on the planet, with between 65 – 68% market share across all devices, including desktop PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. For comparison, Safari — the default option installed on every iPhone and Mac — is a distant second at approximately 17%, followed by Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox.

Google recently doubled the number of security updates it issued to browser users in a bid to unlock "performance improvements, fixes and new capabilities" faster than ever before. But inside the US technology firm, it's already pioneering a system that would update Google Chrome twice per week.

This rapid output is designed to combat scammers' use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to quickly identify vulnerabilities. Google is well aware of the advantages that AI offers when spotting these flaws, since it's already employing this cutting-edge technology to accelerate its bug-fixing capabilities.

Thanks to the superhuman capabilities of AI, Google has rolled out 1,072 bug fixes in the two most recent updates to its Chrome browser, both released last month, which is more than the previous 23 updates combined.

According to the Chrome Security Team, this surge can be directly attributed to AI-powered tools that identify, assess, and help repair vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed, fundamentally transforming how the world's most popular browser manages security threats.

The technology behind these improvements stems from AI systems that can analyse Chrome's vast codebase with remarkable efficiency. Google deployed an agent harness utilising Gemini in early 2026, which discovered vulnerabilities that had eluded human security experts for years.

This should ensure that Chrome users are better protected against flaws, glitches, and vulnerabilities. The increased frequency of these patches could also address what developers term the "patch gap"—the interval between when a fix becomes publicly visible in the open-source code and when it actually protects your browser.

Previously, even after a vulnerability was identified and repaired, you remained vulnerable until you restarted your browser. This waiting period, often extending far beyond the twelve days required for triage and release, creates substantial exploitation risk.

Dynamic patching addresses this by taking advantage of Chrome's multi-process design. Rather than shutting down your entire browser session, the system would sequentially swap out background processes—such as the renderer and graphics processing units—with updated versions whilst you continue working.

This means security fixes could reach your browser without interrupting your workflow or requiring you to schedule a convenient moment to close everything.

Beyond its speedier patch delivery, Google hopes to prevent bugs from entering its Chrome codebase at all. That's because AI systems now scan code changes before they're accepted, catching potential vulnerabilities in the work-in-progress versions of the next browser update before they ever reach your version of Chrome.
