It's earned an official certification as a genuine medical device

Huawei has just unveiled a smartwatch designed to measure your blood pressure — just like a traditional cuff would in a doctor's office.

Dubbed the Watch D3, this wearable packs a tiny inflatable airbag right into its strap, setting it apart from anything Apple, Google, or Samsung currently offers. When in use, the mechanical airbag is meant to inflate and squeeze your wrist, just like the cuff your GP wraps around your arm. A precision sensor then reads the pressure, and Huawei's algorithm turns that into a blood pressure reading for you.

If you need to keep a close eye on your blood pressure, this alternative method might be ideal as it lets you avoid lugging around medical equipment everywhere you go.

This feature also edges out similar models. For instance, Google's Pixel Watch 5 uses an optical sensor and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to produce a monthly Blood Pressure Trends report — and Google itself says it's a wellness tool, not a clinical measurement.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 9 does give you a reading, but it needs recalibrating against a real monitor every month to stay accurate. And the Apple Watch only sends alerts if you have high blood pressure.

Given its capabilities, the watch has earned the CE marking under the EU Medical Device Regulation, which means it's officially certified as a genuine medical device — not just a wellness gadget. Samsung and Google don't have this type of certification, so they can't be labelled as clinical devices.

It also offers round-the-clock Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring, automatically taking readings every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day and night. During sleep, the airbag is said to inflate more quietly so it won't wake you up.

A noteworthy addition is the ability to check your blood pressure right before and after exercise too, which is handy since physical activity can cause noticeable spikes.

The wearable also includes Health Glance, which pulls together a snapshot of up to 11 health indicators — including heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen — in roughly 60 seconds. It's like a mini health check-up on your wrist.

Like other wearables, you can check out the detailed reports in its accompanying app.

Despite housing all that medical hardware, the Watch D3 appears to be surprisingly sleek at just 11.3mm thick and 40 grams — Huawei has shaved roughly 2mm and 8 grams off the previous model. It comes in Black, White, and Mocha Gold, and the display stretches beyond 1.9 inches, with a bright screen so you can still see everything in peak daylight.

Battery life is meant to last up to six days on a single charge, too.

You'll also get 10 months of Bupa Well+ health services worth £200. This is a monthly subscription that gives you access to digital GP services, physiotherapy, mental health resources, and more.

The watch officially lands in the UK on September 23, with a price tag of £399.99.

It arrives alongside the GT 7 Series, which is designed to make outdoor workouts, health tracking and everyday smartwatch features easier to manage. Available in 46mm and 41mm sizes, the GT 7 comes in eight colours, while the more premium GT 7 Pro adds a ceramic bezel and titanium frame for extra durability.

The watches also bring new features including wrist-based turn detection, G-Force detection and an indoor snow sports mode. Skiers can also access maps covering more than 3,000 resorts worldwide, while cyclists get route planning, slope alerts and sharp-turn warnings.

Their Health Insights feature has also been upgraded with features such as Physical Readiness scores and smarter health.

And after taking a year away from the European market, the Huawei Watch 6 Series is back with a focus on smarter health and fitness tracking. Alongside advanced workout modes and AI-powered workout analysis, it can handle calls, navigation, and payments without needing your phone for every task.

Its upgraded Health Glance, Health Insights, and Healthy Living features have also been designed to make keeping track of your wellbeing more straightforward, giving you useful information and recommendations at a glance.

The GT 7 is available now for £279.99, and the upgraded GT 7 Pro starts at £379.99. The Watch 6 Series starts at £199.
