Samsung appears to be gearing up for one of its biggest foldable phone redesigns yet, and the South Korean tech firm is being rather playful about revealing it.

A series of teaser videos across the firm's social media accounts (@SamsungMobile, @SamsungMobileUSA) show everyday items being snipped into shorter, wider shapes. The posts display chocolate bars with their tops lopped off and puzzles missing their upper rows.

It's all pointing towards a possible boxier look for the hotly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 8. Rather than mimicking its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7's slim, tall design, the new model could give you a more widescreen experience when opened. This is ideal if you're looking to read a book or watch a show on a tablet-sized screen.

One of the post's captions also points to this revamped design choice: "Ready for a sweet new shape?"

It's quite the departure from Samsung's usual approach of simply announcing an Unpacked event, and fans are loving the mystery.

Other teasers show someone taking a pizza cutter to a pie, carving out a rectangular slice rather than the usual triangle, with text reading "A whole new slice."

Another features dalgona candy – the traditional Korean treat – with a rectangular shape cut from its centre.

There's also a photo booth strip getting its top portion trimmed away, and a jigsaw puzzle losing its upper row entirely.

A well-known tipster, Ahmed Qwaider, has recently leaked the possible specs of the new foldable on X, formerly Twitter. He writes that the mobile will measure 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7mm when closed and 123.9 × 161.4 × 4.5mm when open. He says it will also weigh 201g, which is 14g less than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Another particularly revealing video displays a palette of purple, pink, and golden colours – shades rumoured to feature on the new device – before cutting to what appears to be a Galaxy Z Fold 8 wallpaper with the number "8" clearly visible. The caption reads: "The canvas is ready."

This is a departure from its predecessors' darker, more muted shades — black, silver, and blue.

Samsung is expected to announce the new mobile at its next Galaxy Unpacked event. The tech firm hasn't officially announced when the blockbuster event will take place, but whispers indicate that it could occur on July 22 in London.

At the showcase, the South Korean company is likely to unveil its full range of next-generation foldable phones. This year's lineup could include not just the redesigned Galaxy Z Fold 8, but also a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip 8.

The new foldables could ace fresh competition too, with Motorola's recent Razr Fold launch and rumours of both a new Pixel Fold and a long-awaited foldable iPhone on the horizon.
