The upcoming bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (August 31) is the perfect excuse to put on your walking boots and explore more of the country.

And if you're looking for inspiration, new research has found the 10 best English routes that combine a scenic hike with a well-earned drink.

Google searches for “pub walks” have surged by 129 per cent over the last month, highlighting growing interest in routes with both impressive scenery and a rewarding pub stop at the end.

Experts at Beavertown found England’s highest-rated walking trails by analysing user ratings and reviews of popular routes across the country.

Taking the top spot is the Seaford to Eastbourne route in East Sussex, which earned an impressive 4.8-star rating from more than 2,300 reviews.

It is a challenging route, spanning 21.7km and taking around six and a half hours to complete, but scenery including the dramatic chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head makes it worth it. And there is plenty of opportunity to find a pub at the end.

In second place is Grindsbrook Clough and Grindslow Knoll Circular in Derbyshire, which has a 4.7-star rating from 885 reviews. The 6.9km Peak District loop begins and ends in Edale, climbing steeply through Grindsbrook Clough before reaching Grindslow Knoll. It then descends back towards the village, where walkers can choose from several pubs for a well-earned drink.

Flamborough Coastal Circuit in East Yorkshire rounds out the top three, also scoring 4.7 stars, this time from 522 reviews. The 17.5km hard-rated walk takes around four and a half to five hours and showcases some of the region's most impressive coastal scenery. Walkers pass Flamborough Head Lighthouse and dramatic chalk cliffs before returning through Flamborough village.

Fourth place goes to Janet's Foss and Malham Tarn Circular via Gordale Scar in North Yorkshire, which boasts a 4.8-star rating from 364 reviews.

The 17.1km Yorkshire Dales route packs several famous landmarks into one walk, including Janet's Foss waterfall, the limestone ravine of Gordale Scar and Malham Cove.
