Money saving expert Martin Lewis has issued an alert to drivers heading to fuel stations over the coming days and weeks amid fears that prices could rise.
Motorists up and down the country have dealt with huge petrol and diesel price shocks in recent weeks in response to soaring oil costs as a result of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The latest data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that drivers are currently paying 152.69p per litre for petrol, and 170.01p for diesel.
It predicts that prices should fall, although some motorway service stations are charging around 20p more per litre for both petrol and diesel.
While prices have fallen slightly since prices peaked in April and May, drivers are still being cautioned to shop around for the cheapest fuel in their area.
Writing on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, Martin Lewis told drivers: "Now is the time to watch for price gouging. It normally happens when prices drop after a peak, not rise."
He noted that the price of Brent crude oil has fallen around $40 (£30) compared to peaks seen in the months following the start of the Iran war at the end of February.
The financial expert highlighted that immediately before war broke out, prices were around $67 (£51), but would generally stay around $60 (£46).

Mr Lewis continued, saying: "So it's not quite back to where it was yet. However, that means we should've seen (as many have) petrol and diesel dropping, and govt should check its dropping enough."
In a response to another X user, he clarified that there was no accusation of profiteering from supermarkets and major retailers.
However, he explained that "now is the time to be vigilant", as well as stating that fluctuating prices should be monitored.
