Enzo Maresca's move to Manchester City has prompted a furious response from Chelsea

Chelsea have broken their silence over Enzo Maresca's controversial departure after Manchester City confirmed the Italian as Pep Guardiola's successor.

The Blues released a lengthy statement on Monday detailing the circumstances surrounding Maresca's exit, insisting the former head coach had made it clear months earlier that he wanted to take over at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea admitted the 2025/26 campaign was "hugely disappointing" and pointed to the disruption caused by Maresca's departure as a major factor behind their struggles.

According to the club, Maresca first informed Chelsea during the autumn that there was a possibility he could replace Guardiola at the end of the season.

They claim it soon became obvious that securing the Manchester City job had become his priority, despite being tied to a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

The statement also accuses Maresca of resigning unexpectedly midway through the campaign, leaving Chelsea with little option but to accept his decision.

"Obviously, we felt let down as we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity," the statement read.

Chelsea insisted they did not want to change head coach during the season but argued they had to protect "our players, our supporters, and the Badge" after Maresca decided he would not continue in the role.

The club also confirmed that confidential compensation agreements have been reached with both Manchester City and Maresca himself.

While no financial details have been disclosed, Chelsea revealed City have paid compensation as part of a settlement, while Maresca has also agreed to make a compensation payment.

The unusually detailed statement offers a rare insight into the breakdown of the relationship between Chelsea and their former manager, with the club clearly keen to explain the circumstances to supporters following widespread speculation over his departure.

Chelsea ended the statement by turning their attention to the future, expressing confidence that new manager Xabi Alonso can lead the club back towards success.

The Blues described Alonso as possessing "an exceptional football mind" and praised his "highest integrity", a phrase many supporters are likely to interpret as a pointed contrast with the circumstances surrounding Maresca's exit.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have secured the man they believe can continue Guardiola's legacy, but Chelsea's strongly worded statement ensures the debate over Maresca's departure is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
