Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed hundreds of its bank branches will have been shut down for good by this time next year in a blow to customers.

The financial institution, which is made up of Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland has already shut down dozens of locations over the last six months.

This month, the banking group confirmed that 12 more branches will close in 2027, with Lloyds Bank and Halifax locations earmarked for closure.

Figures show Lloyds has shut down around 1,600 bank branches across Britain between 2015 and 2026.

According to the banking group, branches have been forced to shut down due to declining footfall and consumers preferring online banking.

It has promised to invest in face-to-face banking with Lloyds taking part in the rollout of Banking Hubs, communal spaces in areas impacted by closures, which are used by multiple high street banks.

Notably, customers can still deposit cash at more than 28,000 PayPoint locations across the UK.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our community bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."

The Government has launched a review into the recent wave of bank branch closures with Rocio Concha, the director of Policy and Advocacy at Which?, breaking down the impact on everyday Britons.

Ms Concha said: "People and communities losing access to face-to-face banking services is a serious problem. Which? research has highlighted the scale of bank branch closures across the UK and the significant impact this is having on communities.

"This announcement shouldn’t divert attention from broader proposals in the financial services bill, which endanger consumer protection.

"Mooted changes to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) would weaken vital consumer safeguards at a time when many are struggling with financial pressures."
