Around 3,800 jobs are expected to be cut as Whitbread dismantles its branded restaurant business

A familiar name on Britain’s restaurant scene is about to disappear for good.

Customers now have only weeks left to visit before a major company overhaul takes effect.

All 106 Beefeater restaurants across the UK will permanently close on 10 September, bringing an end to the family dining chain known for its steaks and burgers.

The date was revealed in a letter sent to members of Beefeater’s reward club, according to the Southend Echo.

The letter said: "We have recently announced changes to our business, which is resulting in the closure of our Branded Restaurants.

"This means that on Thursday 10 September 2026 your local Beefeater and all other UK Beefeaters will close."

The nationwide shutdown is part of a major restructuring programme by Beefeater owner Whitbread, which is expected to cut around 3,800 jobs.

Brewers Fayre and Bar + Block are also being discontinued as part of the overhaul, although it is not yet clear whether all Brewers Fayre restaurants will close on the same day as Beefeater.

Whitbread plans to replace 197 branded restaurants with an integrated food and drink model linked more closely to its Premier Inn hotels.

The company believes the new approach will be more efficient and better reflect what Premier Inn guests want.

The changes will bring an end to several familiar restaurant brands that have served families across the country for decades.

Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul attributed the drastic restructuring to rising operational costs imposed by the Government.

Speaking in April, he said the company had been compelled to act "in light of significant cost increases" triggered by Rachel Reeves' increases to employer National Insurance contributions and business rates.

The former Chancellor's fiscal measures have drawn widespread criticism from the hospitality sector, and Whitbread's decision to shutter its entire restaurant portfolio represents one of the most dramatic corporate responses to date.

The company had already undergone a separate round of restructuring in 2024, which resulted in roughly 1,500 positions being eliminated.

Despite the scale of the job losses, Whitbread has sought to reassure affected workers that many could be kept on.

A company spokesperson previously told The Sun: "As a business which recruits around 15,000 people every year, we expect to be able to retain a significant proportion of those affected and will be looking to redeploy as many of our impacted colleagues as possible."

The firm has indicated that redeployment of staff remains subject to employee consultation.

Whitbread's annual recruitment volume suggests the company believes it can absorb a considerable number of displaced employees into other parts of its operations, particularly within its Premier Inn hotel business.
