Bar + Block, Cookhouse + Pub, and Table + Table are closing down by September 3

Three much-loved UK restaurant chains are closing down for good today after their parent company's latest restructuring efforts.

Some 66 restaurants are shutting after Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn, opted to cease operations at three of its hospitality brands.

Said brands include Bar + Block, Cookhouse + Pub, and Table + Table, with Whitbread beginning of a sweeping September restructuring that will ultimately see 261 restaurants shut permanently across the country.

Table + Table had been a fixture on Britain's dining scene for close to 18 years, while Bar + Block and Cookhouse + Pub each operated for roughly a decade.

Bar + Block, launched in 2016 as an all-day steakhouse with a cocktail menu, was designed to attract a younger demographic.

Other restaurant chains are closing down locations throughout this month as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

Brewers Fayre locations are due to close on 7 September, followed by Beefeater restaurants on 10 September, bringing the month's total to 261 permanent closures.

Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul attributed the drastic restructuring to pressures "in light of significant cost increases" triggered by the former Chancellor Rachel Reeves' rises in National Insurance contributions and business rates.

The company has drawn up a five-year survival strategy aimed at delivering £250million in savings. This involves offloading 110 sites and repurposing others to create 600 additional hotel rooms.

Whitbread also intends to dispose of £1.5billion worth of freehold property to generate funds for future expansion. Approximately 3,800 roles are expected to be eliminated as part of the sweeping restructuring programme.

Around 53 of the 261 restaurants earmarked for closure have been rescued through an agreement with Queensway Hospitality Group.

These sites are set to be rebranded under new ownership, preserving jobs and keeping the venues operational rather than leaving them permanently shuttered.
