High street and online banks have been hit with IT issues and app errors in recent years, with Santander and Monzo appearing to be the latest affected
Two major banks have been hit with apparently separate IT glitches, which have left customers unable to access online banking or withdraw money from cash machines.
Santander customers are reporting issues when attempting to get money from ATMs, whereas Monzo customers are unable to access their online banking app.
On outage monitor DownDetector, there was a spike in complaints from Santander customers with hundreds of reports coming from around 1 pm today.
Similarly, more than 3,000 complaints came through from Monzo customers at the same time, with the number of reports falling from this peak.
Taking to social media, customers voiced their frustration with their respective banks over the issues which appear to have lasted throughout this afternoon.
One Monzo customer wrote on X: "Why am I unable to transfer money to my son's account? He’s 13 years old, currently unable to order food at the place he’s at as it’s card only and he’s only got cash."
In response, the online bank said: "We're currently experiencing issues with our app, and we're sorry that it has affected you being able to transfer money to your son. Our team is aware and working on a fix to get things running again ASAP."
Similarly, a Santander customer messaged their bank publicly on the platform: "Are you aware of ATM network problems in Essex? Santander ATM says Network not available."
Santander replied: "I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. We are aware of issues being experienced at ATM's and with certain transactions, our tech teams are currently investigating."
As complaints flooded in, Monzo announced that it had activated its independent backup bank, Monzo Stand-in, to mitigate the situation.
According to the bank, customers will still be able to make card payments, withdraw cash, freeze cards and have transfers come through.
It noted that a permanent fix is being rolled out as it hopes to have Monzo's full service up and running as soon as feasibly possible.
In a statement, Monzo said: "We're sorry for any trouble you're having making bank transfers or using the Monzo app.
"Our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix to get things running again ASAP. Thanks for bearing with us, we appreciate your patience."
