The Body Shop will shut nearly 100 shops after falling into administration

The Body Shop has announced 75 more store closures after seven sites were shut with immediate effect last week.

As a result of the closures, 489 staff will be made redundant. These sites will shut in a phased period over the next four to six weeks.

The retailer, which collapsed into administration on February 13, is set to close nearly half of its 198 sites in the UK, with 116 confirmed to stay open.

Tony Wright, Joint Administrator, said: “In taking swift action to right-size The Body Shop UK store portfolio, we have stabilised the business and are providing the best opportunity for this iconic brand to have a long-term, sustainable future.

"The UK business continues to trade in administration, and we remain fully focused on exploring all options to take the business forward.”

Administrators for The Body Shop said a reduced store footprint would coincide with a "renewed focus" on the brand's products, online sales channels and wholesale strategies, to bring the brand in line with industry peers and support a return to financial stability.

The Head Office headcount is set to reduce by around 40 per cent, resulting in a future headcount of more than 400 full-time employees, they said last week.

The Joint Administrators also announced the closure of The Body Shop Ambassador programme.

The Body Shop said it would shut seven stores as an immediate step on February 20.
