Multiple passengers found dead after bus crashes in British tourist hotspot

Officers have not specified the number of dead and injured.

GB News understands the vehicle was a Dutch tour bus.

A spokesman for ANVR, a Dutch travel industry association, told the local media the passengers were all from the Netherlands.

According to Swiss media, 48 people, including the driver and passengers, were on the bus at the time of the incident.

Officers from Swiss Police confirmed the coach collided with the crash barrier and then overturned.

No other vehicles were believed to be involved in the incident.

ANVR's Director Frank Radstake said it was believed the vehicle had veered off the road to avoid a boulder.

He told local media: "The bus driver had to make an evasive manoeuvre, possibly because of a boulder on the road. During that manoeuvre, the bus tipped onto its side and slid some distance down the slope."

The village of Zernez is the entry point for Switzerland's National Park, attracting thousands of tourists a year.

Switzerland's only national park and the oldest reserve in the Alps, the land stretches more than 40 sq miles across the Engadine valley.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin said: "I am deeply shocked and dismayed by today’s tragic accident involving a Dutch coach in Graubünden.

"At this painful time, my thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones.

"I offer my sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. I am very grateful for the efforts of the first responders.

"The relevant Swiss authorities will ensure that a comprehensive and thorough investigation is carried out to establish all the circumstances surrounding this accident."

A spokesman for the Dutch foreign ministry said: "We are in contact with the Swiss authorities, the tour operator, and the emergency assistance centre to coordinate consular aid as effectively as possible."

Roman Rüegg, the spokesman for Graubünden cantonal police, declined to comment on the number of victims until authorities had contacted relatives in the Netherlands.
