'Red Ed' is undoubtedly the most fearful of a frightening bunch, the former Chancellor writes

A new dawn broke this week. Sir Keir Starmer, realising the game was up, threw in the towel. He had been surgically removed as head of the Government.

Andy Burnham is rightly thought to be a shoo-in as the next leader. Asking the question who will be the next Prime Minister is one of those "is the Pope Catholic?" type of questions.

As the next Prime Minister seems obviously to be Andy Burnham, the attention of the media is now firmly riveted on the question of who will be the next Chancellor.

This question is more interesting, as there are a number of figures who appear to be in the running. This doesn't apply to the Prime Minister job, which seems to have all the dreary predictability of a North Korean succession.

Among the likes of Wes Streeting, Yvette Cooper and Darren Jones, a name that almost always comes up is Ed Miliband, the pro-Net Zero zealot who is currently Energy Secretary.

Red Ed is undoubtedly the most fearful of a frightening bunch. On top of the usual tax-raising socialism we would expect from this Government, we have, in Red Ed, an eco-warrior focused on fighting climate change and raising taxes exorbitantly to pay for carbon-reducing measures.

Red Ed is also as fervently committed to the socialist cause as any of his rivals to the job. The son of the avowedly Marxist professor, Ralph Miliband, Ed has been committed to socialism since his childhood.

If he becomes Chancellor, we can all expect a flurry of tax hikes. Thresholds on income tax will stay the same, meaning more and more people will be dragged into higher tax bands.

There will also almost certainly be attempts to introduce a "wealth tax" and other confiscatory taxes on the "rich". This will, no doubt, lead to even more flight of wealth creators and entrepreneurs.

The inevitable lack of enterprising spirit in this country will lead to the worst of both worlds. A drain of genuinely innovative young commercial talent, and a further increase in the benefits bill, paid for by dwindling taxes.

On top of this, the Net Zero religion commands that further taxes wil be heaped on the back of British business and private individuals.

Red Ed, a former leader of the Labour Party, is the darling of the party membership. Many of these people think he was cruelly robbed of being Prime Minister by a blind electorate in 2015.

As Chancellor, he would be the undisputed king of the left, exerting the power of his office combined, more relevantly, with his position within the Labour Party. Forget about Burnham's "King of the North" act. Miliband would be the true monarch of the Government.

Burnham is too shrewd to give such a figure so much power. If he takes the path of appointing Miliband, he would regret it instantly. It would undermine his position at the top of the Government and the Labour Party.

More importantly for us, it would set the country on a road of eco loon-charged Marxism, which would be ruinous for all of us.
