Donald Trump launches attack on Labour's ‘terrible’ Chagos surrender deal as he warns Andy Burnham ‘will have to look at it’

Asked by Bev Turner about the deal, Mr Trump said: “It's terrible. They gave it over to people who shouldn't really have it.

“In my opinion, that was terrible."

Earlier this year, Keir Starmer's government stalled in pursuing the deal after President Trump withdrew US support.

At the time, he blasted the agreement as an “act of great stupidity”, a position that he refreshed in his conversation with Bev.

“It was like they were giving it to people that nobody even knows if they have any right to it.

“That was your previous government. I think your new Prime Minister will have to look at that. But that was very bad,” he said.

Under Mr Burnham, negotiations on the deal appear set to continue, with representatives from Britain and Mauritius meeting next week.

Mauritian officials are due to meet opposite numbers from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), according to the Mauritian Government.

Speaking with The People's Channel, President Trump also refreshed his frustrations over the UK’s lack of involvement in the Iran war, including complications with the Diego Garcia air base on the Chagos Islands.

“We were flying planes much further than necessary because you weren't able to give it to us.

“It was terrible,” the US leader said.

In the early stages of the conflict, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer blocked US warplanes from flying sorties from British bases.

The proposed deal would transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while Britain would retain access to Diego Garcia through a long-term lease.

Mr Burnham has not yet publicly detailed his position on the treaty since taking office.

However, the issue will likely be brought before him at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Mauritius is expected to seek further action from Britain.

Bev also questioned President Trump on his position on the Falklands after Argentine President Javier Milei, an ally of the US leader, refreshed his country’s claim on the British territory.

"Well, look, I was there when they had the first war. That was a long time ago, and I watched it so carefully, and you comported yourselves very well.

"You took it back pretty strongly, but it's a long way away. That's a big trip; it's a long way."

Mr Trump contextualised his less-than-enthusiastic endorsement in his disappointment over the lack of support from the UK against Iran.

“Your country's not doing well. Don't forget, you get a big percentage of your oil from the Strait of Hormuz, and you weren't there to help me... Your country was not there to help me.”

Responding to Mr Trump's criticism of Sir Keir Starmer, Bev asked the US President whether he was “hurt” by Britain's lack of support.

He told GB News: “I wasn't hurt... I call it an education process.”
