The Princess of York has opted for discretion during a turbulent period

Princess Beatrice was seen on a quiet shopping excursion to Fortnum & Mason on July 30, just over a week ahead of her 38th birthday on August 8.

The eldest daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor appeared to deliberately blend into the London crowds, keeping her look understated and low-key.

She wore a recycled deep blue midi dress from Kitri Studio, the 'Joni' style, priced at £137.50, which she had first been spotted in during a visit to Bluebird restaurant back in May 2023.

This time she paired it with £50 suede ballet flats from Zara.

Her strawberry blonde hair was worn down in loose waves, with minimal makeup completing the discreet appearance.

The princess's understated approach comes against a backdrop of significant family turmoil.

Her parents were forced out of Royal Lodge, their longtime family residence, in February 2026.

Mr Mountbatten-Windsor is currently living in Norfolk, having been arrested on his 66th birthday earlier this year on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

He was released that same evening under investigation, and has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The upheaval has cast a shadow over the York family, with Beatrice opting for discretion during a turbulent period.

Royal biographer Andrew Lownie, who wrote Entitled: The Rise and Fall of The House of York, has suggested her birthday will be far from celebratory.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he claimed Beatrice's 38th birthday "will not be an easy one".

Mr Lownie emphasised the scale of change the family has endured in recent months: "Much has changed for the York family since Beatrice's last birthday."

Beatrice has been notably absent from several high-profile gatherings in recent months.

She was not seen at Royal Ascot, traditionally one of the most important fixtures on the royal social calendar, nor did she appear to attend the lavish 40th birthday celebrations of her friend Alice Naylor-Leyland, held in Tuscany.

Her most recent significant public appearance was at the June wedding of her cousin Peter Phillips to NHS nurse Harriet Sperling, which took place at All Saints' Church in Kemble.

On that occasion, she was accompanied by her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and her sister Princess Eugenie.
